Sol (player character)
Sol is the player character and protagonist of I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. Sol was born on the spacecraft Stratospheric along with several other children. During the events of the game, Sol is a resident of Earth's first exocolony on the planet Vertumna. Introduced at age 10, Sol (like most of the teens in the game) has 3 age-based character designs, as well as adult designs for each of the standard endings. Due to an unspecified wormhole anomaly, Sol is trapped in a time loop. Sol can retain memories from past lives (past runs of the game) that provide new dialogue options and can avoid or unlock certain events.
The three default names for Sol are Solanaceae, Solane, and Solana. The player may also enter a custom name by selecting the 'Something Else' option in the opening sequence. Sol's pronouns are fully customizable via text input in-game, though many players refer to Sol using the 3 default pronoun sets provided by the slider in the menu; he/him, she/her, and they/them. Sol also has three different appearances based on the gender presentation that the player selects in the menu. Both of these things may be changed at any time via the Friends tab in the menu.
Through participating in different activities ('jobs'), Sol can build skills that will make new story paths and dialogue accessible. These jobs may determine the ending the player receives on Sol's 20th birthday.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Sol has two parents, Flulu and Geranium. Sol has a generally positive relationship with both of them, though it becomes slightly more strained the more rebellious Sol is. Sol's parents want what is best for their child and often express this in dialogue. Flulu often urges Sol to become educated and be productive while Geranium takes a more laid-back approach.
Sol can befriend any of the Stratospheric kids, or pursue a romantic relationship with them. Several other characters are introduced later in the game that the player may become friends or partners with. Some of these relationships can have major effects on the game's story.
Most NPCs seem to like Sol by default, implying that Sol has built positive relationships with them prior to the game's events.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The name Solanaceae comes from the Latin name for the family of nightshades. Contrary to the artbook, Solanaceae is not a genus, and includes a large variety of plants, including such plants as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, and many others.
- The description of the Gift From a Secret Admirer card states that Sol enjoys a television show called 'The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon'. This is a reference to the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.
